Four Corners
A night out at the pub, chewing the fat with the local characters and setting the world to rights, Feral-style.
About the work
A man sits at the bar alone, staring into his pint. Slowly, he comes to life and begins talking to whoever will listen. We hear about what is happening in his life and how he comes to be there then he leads us through to another room where we are invited to put on headphones. The headphones allow us to enter the heads of the people who use the pub as their ‘third place’ – neither work nor home. In the pub they can be anyone they choose to be. They can even be themselves…
We weave our way through, stumbling into dream upon dream, secret upon secret, confession upon confession. We connect. Then outside, we visit and revisit the faces of a thousand people. We connect. We dance. We are in another world and we are home.
“Inventiveness, wit, great writing and music are the hallmarks of a Feral piece and Four Corners didn’t disappoint.”
How we made it
We always spend a lot of time in the place where we are putting on a show. Spending a lot of time in The Spread Eagle was no hardship!
There’s always a frisson of danger when we put private performance into a public place and performing this in the pub when it was open to all added a whole new dimension to the piece. As ever, our actors and our community company were adept stewards for fielding any unplanned interactions.
Performances
A week of performances took place in and around The Spread Eagle Pub, Hereford in October 2012.
“Not your average night down the pub but in a way it was!”
